    well...

    this is weird...

I made available my first gps file from my website. the website is all about the historical railroads from my area; & the file was a .KMZ, for Google Earth. It contains a Path (which represents the railroad right-of-way) & Placemarks (which represent stations along the line).

So I upload the .KMZ file to my server; & on the appropriate page in my site I created a simple link to that file:
    Code:
    <a href="NameOfFile.kmz">Name of File.KMZ</a>
I give instructions on that page telling users to right-click on the file & select Save Target As to download it.

So...I try it myself...& up comes a zip file in the Save As dialog. So I download it...un-zip it...& the file that's extracted is in the form of a .KML (not a .KMZ), with a different document name (???)

anybody know what I did wrong...???...I'm not getting this.

    thanks,

Did it SAY zip file or just show the zip file icon? I'm guessing the latter, as a KMZ file IS a zipped KML file:

    wired...

thanks, man...!!!...had no idea of such. Whenever I attempted to save any Place file in GE...the default option was .KMZ. just went back in to the save dialog & realized that .KML is also an option (which I'll use from now on).

    thanks again,

    well...this is weirder.

I uploaded the new .KML file to my html directory at the server...changed the code to accomodate the .KML download...tested the download...& it comes back as an .XML file (???!@#$%^&*). Double-checked everything & tested the download from a friends computer...same thing happens. Called my web provider & they said everything looks normal on their end (which I could see in remote view in dreamweaver anyway).

    really weird, eh...???

Don't know why the file extension is changing, but it is an XML file anyway, so it's not that big of a deal:
