ok I have the main content of my site set up with a width of 960px. I then have a Z-indexed div with an image inside it coming from behind the main content area. I am trying to figure out a way to have the horizontal scrolling ignore the z-indexed image if at all possible. so that you will only get a horizontal scroll bar if the main content needs it but not the z-indexed div. See below:

The green area is the main content area. The red is the z-indexed image. if the window is being resized I don't want to get a horizontal scroll until it is needed for the green area. and to completely ignore the red area.

    Any suggestions?

You're likely looking for a variant of fixed positioning, although I must confess that i don't totally understand the question.

The only thing I can think of is making it a background image in your CSS. The only problem with that is you might not be able to get the proper positioning you want.
