    Hi Everyone!

    Been doing websites for a couple of years for myself and friends. I know basic HTML and CSS. However, I mostly just cheat and use Fireworks. As my sites are getting a little bigger and are going to need more frequent updating, I wanted to try and learn Dreamweaver. However, I also wanted to keep using Fireworks to build the Nav Bar's (its easy and I have more creative ability with Fireworks).

    So, what I wanted was a basic page built with a simple table (easy for me to work with and I like to control the display with set pixel sizes) and the nav bar imported into one of the cells. I them wanted to save this page as a “master” copy for the site so that changes made to that page would update all pages on the site copied from that master page.

    I tried importing a navbar built with Frieworks (MX version) to Dreamweaver (MX version) and saving the page as template. Ran into lots of link problems, so decided to try saving the navbar code as a library item.

    The navbar code, saved as a lib item imported ok and worked fine until I tried changing any other part of the table. Then suddenly the nav bar stretches across the entire page, all my cells are out of shape, and I keep getting the invalid mark up error message when I try and fix it.

    I have included the code. Any help/ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul.

    Here's the code:

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>index</title>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    <link href="/train.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
    </head>

    <body onLoad="MM_preloadImages('/images/navbar_r1_c1_f2.gif','/images/navbar_r2_c1_f2.gif','/images/navbar_r3_c1_f2.gif')">

    HI - I'd like to solve your problem in a better way, but really what I have to tell you is to stop designing in tables, and learn how to use CSS for layout on your HTML pages.
    I haven't used tables for anything but data in ages, so can't help you.

    I'm going to move this thread from introductions to HTML and CSS help - you may find an answer there.
    Good luck.

    Mare is right. I know you don't want to, but in the long run, you'll be glad you took the time.

    Fireworks MX and DW MX , are great until you run into problems like this. I used to do a lot of the same stuff, even while learning CSS and XHTML ( which DW does support ), I continued using the tools I was comfortable with.

    Here is the problem, DW JavaScript has bugs in it unless you use it exactly as it was generated. Once I realized that most of the JS that DW creates usually creates problems for search engines( search engines don't read js, they read text ), it was a no brained for me to move to CSS completely.

    I still manage some old sites that were done this way, but am gradually changing them over and urging my clients to changeover as well. as for importing your code into the lib, DW more than likely entered some extra CR ( that don't actually show up ) but wreak havoc on the code.

    Print ( yeah print ) a copy of the working code... Then print a copy of the code that is now in your lib.
    The differences should be evident ( make sure to turn OFF ) word wrap in code view when you do this.

    Might be as simple as deleting a couple of empty spaces.

    Thanks for the feedback guys. Very much appreciated.

    So, CSS it is then... anyone able to recommend a good CSS layout tutorial site? Looks like there are plenty out there.
