    Hello everyone!~ New to the site and I hope I can assist and be assisted.
    It's been a while since I did ANYTHING with html/css and quite frankly it seems I have forgotten a lot of things.

    Just trying to create a basic website that will look kinda like this:

    This of course doesn't have the nav bar since I created that with css but essentially I want it to look like this and then a container in a solid color to sit on top of the stripes with whatever content I need. Unfortunately it's not going as planned and looks more like this:

    Can anyone help me or give me some pointers/tips?

    Thank you!

    yeah, pop this into your css style sheets on the elements that are hugging the left hand side that you want in the centre:

    margin: 0 auto;

    This will send all of the elements to the centre of the page regardless of the browser window size. to fill up the browser window with the background colour set your background div element to have no width size and repeat your background image on the x axis, if it's not an image just specify the colour your require. You will need to specify a width for your text div, but that's all you need to do.

    Hope this helps.

    Didn't quite work.
    - Although it centered the content box which is what I wanted, still having the problem of it not starting flush below the nav menu.
    - The nav menu wont stretch out like the rest of the header/footer does with the auto setting. How do I get it to stretch automatically across based on the resolution of the person viewing?
    -How do I adjust the white gaps between the header and footer?
    -Lastly, the drop down menu....how do I make it a uniform size?

    Edit: one more thing....when viewing with other browsers like IE and firefox and such, the image doesn't always center....why is that? (In this case the header the image is more to the right so the logo is no longer centered)

    Browsers have their own default settings - and they differ from browser to browser.

    I fibs it is always best to start out my CSS with a reset. This will override the browser's defaults and force it to use your CSS instead.

    It can be as simple as

    *{margin:0; padding:0;}

    But in order to be fully in control of everything in my CSS I usually go with one of these.

    It goes at the very top of the CSS, before anything else.

    Thank you so much for the reset that helped bring the white gaps together.

    But I still have the issue with:
    Navigation not auto fitting like the rest (is it even possible?)
    Content box not sitting flush BELOW the nav

    Also, if I wanted to do like....multiple containers to be like different columns how would i do that with css?

    Thank you!

    It would be much simpler for us to help you if you posted your code or uploaded a zip file of it.

    I'm working on your site. I'm pretty sure its nothing major. When I do fix it make sure to go over it so you learn and get better at this though.

    You know what. Your layout is all done a very unusual way. Is it okay if I restart for you and setup a layout exactly like you have? Then all you have to do is fill in the header pictures and whatnot yourself. This will also be much more helpful in terms of learning as your layout wont really work.
