css for "banner wings" not rendering well in IE

    Hi Folks,

I'm trying to get a sales landing page up for a client,
the headline banners for certain sections feature a
"wing" or "wrap-around" effect that's set up in CSS.

Looks fine in FF, chrome etc, but good old IE messes it up
and shifts the whole banner downward below the side "wings"
instead of in line with it.

    here's the link:
I've tried putting a filter up to a specific IE style sheet,
using "IF" statements in the doc header, but can't seem
to monkey the IE styles to make it work ...

any help would be greatly appreciated ... thanks!

It's not IE. Hint: if you think it's IE because the majority of designer wannabes have an irrational hatred for IE and assume it screws everything up when all browsers are broken on some level, it usually isn't. So there's your bigger piece of advice.

This is a case where you coded something incorrectly and left it open to browser interpretation. FF and Chrome just happened to do it the way you wanted it. What's happening is that your container is 640 pixels and your image is 721 pixels. FF and Chrome are compensating by making it fit. IE is compensating by shoving the whole thing down.

If browser compatibility is that much of an issue for you and you're already using an image, my suggestion would be to create one PNG image for the entire banner, including the wings themselves. It'll be simpler to code, the overhead increase will be minimal at best, and assuming you code this correctly you'll have your cross-browser issues solved.
