looking for a suggestion on building site

I have always built sites a certain way and am questioning if I should change my way of doing my sites:

my tree version of the site:
    index.html
    aboutus.html
    contactus.html
    gallery.html

I now noticed a professional website that seemed to appear to be something like this:

    index.html
    aboutus/index.html
    contactus/index.html
    gallery/index.html

is this a new seo thing to help search engines? or is this probably their preferences?

Won't make a difference either way, since the root of a folder should be /, not /index.html.

So that was probably done more to organize folders. If the site was set up properly, the pages would be /, about-us/, contact-us/, and gallery/. Of course, there would probably be a lot more content than just four pages.

Yeah, sites do that just to make their URLs look more "professional" or easy to remember.. So their end users don't have to add the ".html" at the end of every page url.

I don't think so...it will make any differences from the SEO point of view....Yes our respected WDF intern is absolutely right the root folder must be / not /index.html. It won't make any change in my view too.

So, what you're saying is, I won't get more SERPs from the off-pagesite SEOs with my long-tail keywords by reorganizing my site? I wonder what Mishnoon has to say on the matter. I do want that free #1 Binga, afterall.

I heard he got assassinated by his own SEO ninjas and buried under an avalanche of -30 penalties.
