    Question CSS Wrapper Advice

    I hope I ask this right, and I ask that you be tolerant with me.

    I am having an issue with understanding exactly whats needs a WRAPPER around it. I am new to Web Design and CSS and am just playing around with simple design....

    This is what I'm interested in knowing - I have a Wrapper containing the ( main content, sidebar and footer ) within a WordPress Theme. But right above the WRAPPER I have the ( top nav ). Simply put, the ( top nav ) is between the ( header and the wrapper ).

    Question : Should I have the ( top nav ) within a WRAPPER ?

    Right now it's like an Island between the ( header and the wrapper ) , and it's CSS is:

    .top_nav {
    height:auto;
    margin:0 auto;
    width:960px;
    }

    It is centered and looks great ! But still, does it need to be within a wrapper?

    Here's the short answer. Don't use "wrapper" divs. They add no semantic value, and a rarely actually necessary.

    That said, sometimes it is helpful to group certain things just to make positioning easier and more consistent.

    Bottom line: do what makes sense for the particular situation, but don't use extra elements if you don't need to.

    And to directly answer your question, the nav to me doesn't belong to the same "group", if you will, as the content and sidebar. Thus, I wouldn't put the wrap around it.
