Unhappy What does doc type mean ?

Whenever I start coding for my webpage or layout in HTML 5 .. I always see there's a word <!doctype> on the top (written if we use any software like in Dream viewer) .. I asked to many other people that what the basic mean of it, but the answer I got was not so clear.. majority of people says this is nothing you should not to take any notice on it and some says this is a claim.. can any body help me in making me clear that what is this and what the actual mean of it ?

It declares what version of HTML your page is using. The browser uses this to determine how to read the HTML you have written.

Im not making an assumption im telling you that is what it does. I have no idea what they mean by a claim. What it does is what i mentioned. Im also not sure what you mean by does it consider any part of our coding.
