Getting CSS to automatically adjust to content

I have a menu bar at the top of my page that is set to 800px. I need it to adjust to the amount of content that is in it. I know I have done this before but for the life of me i can't get it to work. If I set width:auto, it goes to the width of the page. I want it to fit just to the margin of the outer text within it. What could I be doing wrong?

Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks.
But of course, if you dig deeper, itís really how it works.
