Scroll and Text in Image Problem

Well, we got ourselves in a little confusion. Not the best web designers, we admit. But are trying to redesign our homepage at https://americasbesthistory.com to include larger images with text on top to be better to navigate on smaller devices.

It looks okay, but somehow now the webpage at full value (desktop) is wider than it is when it folds down to mobile device size. Not sure what we did to do that. Any ideas?

The other thing is ... I think we're using some go around to put the text atop the images, but it's not an efficient solution. When it folds down, the text stays the same size. Is there a way to get the text to be responsive, like you can with images themselves.

    Here's the page we're working on ... https://americasbesthistory.com/index081118.html

Sorry for the stupid questions. All prompted by Google's make everything secure edict of last month, not that this specific problem was caused by it.

    Thanks,

    JD
