    How can I align a div to the centre and still have it as a layer (z-index) without using JavaScript?

    How about this:

    <div style="margin-left:200px; margin-right:200px" etc....>

    No, because it would not be the same for all resolutions and browser sizes.

    Nest it:
    Code:
    <div align="center">
        <div style="position: relative; width: 750px; z-index: 50">
        </div>
    </div>

    Figure the difference using left and width....

    Code:
    <div style="position:absolute;width:50%;left:25%;">
    It should be: left = (100-width)/2
