    What's the point of this? I see it all the time in Dreamweaver and FrontPage and have no idea what it does...

    It's similar to <span>, although it implicitly includes a line break. It allows you to easily apply CSS to a whole section of text, among other things. It's also helpful for Javascript.

    It is also supposedly what you are meant to make page layouts with. But tables are much easier and less of a pain in the arse.

    I gave up using Tables a while back and find Div's much easier to use. The code is a lot tidier and as long as you adhere to the XHTML stadards it's compatible in all the new browsers.
