    Use the wrap attribute. Possible values are off, virtual, or physical.

    By default, word wrap is not enabled; use either virtual or physical to enable it. The difference between the two has to do with the format the data is transmitted to the host; virtual wrapping only affects the display, physical wrapping actually sends multiple lines to the server.

    i had put wrap="off" into my html tag for my textarea, but it doesnt validate.

    the reason i wanted it off, was so that a long line, would put scrollbars onto the textarea.

    So wrap="off" is not standard, but it'll work in IE and Netscape. But if you really want to adhere to standards, try the CSS solution.
