Javascript or ASP? I don't know ASP but in Javascript alert() pops up a message box (client-side).

If you mean effectively make an ASP script display a message box, then something along these lines (I hope my ASP is right):
    Code:
    <% Response.write("<script type='text/javacsript'>alert('whatever');</script>") %>

    Close, filburt.

    <%
    Response.Write "<script type=""text/javascript"">" & vbCrLf
    Response.Write "alert ('whatever');" & vbCrLf
    Response.Write "</script>" & vbcrLf
    %>

The vbCrLf seems to make a big difference with JavaScripts since it puts each line of code on a single line.

I'm lucky I did that well, I'm so used to using sane languages where a semicolon is needed at the end of the line
