    in my style I have this:

    #layout-mainleft a:link, a:visited, a:active {text-decoration:underline; color:#6A7581;}
    #layout-mainleft a:hover {text-decoration:none; color:#A4B5C8;}
    Unfortunately, this apparently applies to <a name="whatever"> tags also.

    Does anybody know how to only make it apply to hyperlinks and not page anchors...?

    thanks.

    Code:
    <a name="whatever" class="anchor"></a>

    .anchor a { text-decoration none;  }
    Try that...

    Nope didnt work.

    It'll still inherit all of the values of the "a {}" as well.

    #layout-mainleft a:link, a:visited, a:active {text-decoration:underline; color:#6A7581;}

    Here's the issue with this, a comma separates things completely. Therefore a:visited, a:active are given that style (the entire <a> tag). I think that's you're problem there.

    Honestly I think somethin'gs wrong with your #id a:link, I think it's formatted differently than just a space. The way you have it written, it applies to all <a id="#layout-mailleft">

    You need something like
    #layout-maileft->a:link{}... but I'm not sure exactly what the format is.

    the way you have it is if your code is
    Code:
    <div id="layout-mainleft"><a href="....">...</a>...</div>

    try this

    Code:
    a.layout-mainleft:link, a.layout-mainleft:visited, a.layout-mainleft:active {
       text-decoration: underline;
       color: #6A7581;
    }
    with this

    Code:
    <a href="..." class="layout-mainleft">...</a>
    <a href="..." class="layout-mainleft">...</a>
