I know, I know!!! What's my definition of best? Here you go:
    • Has an admin function so that she can upload pics and make albums herself
    • Is configurable (she wants to select the slideshow duration, I say the customer will want to do that)
    • Needs to run on Linux/PHP/MySQL (what my host provides, this isn't written in stone though for a good package)
    • Has different permission levels for the users
    • Has automated features (random images, thumbnails, conversion, etc.)

These are off the top of my head and seem to be the most important to my client.

The two that I thought were good are: Gallery Project and LinPH

But when I showed them to the client, well, you should have seen the disgusted look on her face.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanx, Dave.

I've used Gallery before. If you want to see it in action: www.scottconnor.com/cruise/

It's got a few different themes, and a pretty good admin interface. It also doesn't require a database. You can still give your photos titles and captions though.

It also allows members to sign up, and you can allow certain members to add albums and/or add to albums. Check it out, it may be what you're looking for.

About the only thing I don't like about Gallery is that it doesn't seem to have a slideshow built in.

Ah, but it does have a slide show. I dont use it much, but I know there are some options to customize it. On my Gallery install, the options are the default, and you can access it by clicking the Slideshow link that's under the search box on my gallery's homepage.
