I'm not even sure this topic belongs in this forum, but what is a good way to manage lots of files for a website? My site is starting to get pretty big, in terms of pictures, and other files.

I have up until now done all my coding through a notepad type editor, so it offers no help in managing a site. Which programs, and techniques would you guys recommend I use to manage my site?

I have looked into database stuff, but I'm not sure if thats what they are meant for. Again, I'm completely lost on this topic.

Well for physical files personaly I use this method.
Images stored in the /i/ directory.
    Style sheets in /s/
    Java and javascript in /j/

Then for the content I use MYSQL backend with a PHP script to call it.
There are a ton of prebuilt tools that do all of this for you. one that I reccomend is TextPattern you can get it at http://www.textpattern.com/
