    I need to break out of the frameset. Naturally, I don't know that the session is timed out until the user clicks a button ...

    I DO check a the session key (created by me and cancelled upon time out), and if it doesn't exist, then I assume a time out and go directly to the login page with the appropriate error message.

    Unfortunately, I'm STILL in the frames page. So I get the login page in the middle of the frames. How can I force the Login page to _top every time thru?

    I think from the sounds of it, you want target="_parent". That will move your frame into the parent window (i.e. the full browser window.)

    Either that, or you want to put framebusting JavaScript in your login page itself. See this page for more information:
