I am a professional writer in Toronto, Canada who has worked with the same Web designer on a couple of projects; it was a successful collaboration, but she is leaving the biz. I'm wondering if it would be useful to approach Web design firms to see if they would recommend me to their clients for copywriting or content-providing for the sites that are being designed. Do most Web design firms have these kind of relationships? Or do the clients invariably provide the copywriter/content provider?

    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I've found that most of the time, the clients provide the copy. They either have to through their manufacturers and/or suppliers or they simply want to write their own because they feel, quite justifiably, that they can more adequately reflect their business message.

You also have to consider that you may well be approaching firms and/or designers/developers that may not wish to be approached. For example, there was a time where I was approached 30-40 times per week by all sorts of solicitors, including copywriters. It got to the point where I had to stop publishing contact information online and create several rules within my VoIP portal to block calls from 800, 855, 866, 877, 888, etc. You'll need to find a way to reach your target audience online without bothering them, and that's not easy.
