I have been working at web design now for just under a year now. I played around developing simple guild sites for some friends, stuff for school. Now i find myself wanting to branch off and learn the more techical stuff like PhP (forums, login scripts) but i dont know where to find material on it.

If anyone here knows what books are best, or websites that can help i would greatly appreciate it.

I learned how to do logins and build simple forums from SAMS teach Yourself PHP, MySQL & Apache in 24 Hours. Though it took a little longer than 24 hours it is really a great place to begin.

it covers forums, login and authenitcation, building calendars, sessions & cookies,a shopoping cart, mailing list and a lot of other useful things, as well as the basica building blocks og php and mysql.

i refernce it everytime i open my text editor. it has been the best book so far and i have 5 different php/mysql books.

Definitely. That's how I started as well. Coded some of their examples, and then started to modify them to what I wanted them to do.

I just learn't from tutorials, can't remeber which.

I found this site ( http://www.learn-php-tutorial.com/ ) after being sent a email. It looks pretty good. They send you a link to a .doc which is pretty much a small book for free.

Looks good. Definetly worth checking out if your new to PHP.

To save you having to fill in your email heres the link to the .doc and .pdf formats:
