Since I first started developing in PHP, each project sees me using new ways to prevent, or take care of users spamming my forms.

I think the best method I have is not making messages/comments public to the whole site until I give them the authorisation (such as a boolean field).

However, over the past week, I have been getting similar messages, they appear to be adult website links, and they all come from yahoo address (user@yahoo.com)

The fact that they all share the same exact content points to them being the result of some bot, would you agree?

As I say these messages are not viewable by anyone other than myself, where I authorise or delete them, but I was wondering what ideas you would come up with.

One I thought of would be to either rename the file, as if this was a bot, surely it has a reference to my file, meaning it now becomes outdated, or changing the name of the form elements for the same reason.

    Cheers

Hm, totally slipped my mind, though I would like to see if changing one of what I mentioned would work too. Thanks for the suggestion.

A nice one here that I've just installed and tried out.

    Works nicely.

I too have had a lot of trouble with spam-bots, and a CAPTCHA (together with possibly an IP Banning system) can eliminate 95% - the one listed above looks quite good.

I'm absolutely sick of spam to my inbox. Even with some forms spam can get through. Does CAPTCHA really prevent spam?

Well, read up on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha

I never knew what it stood for til now, god bless Turing!

You cannot really say yes or no to your question, as if someone wants something bad enough they will go to extraordinary lengtrhs to achieve that.

The premise of CAPTCHA is very smart though.

Turing is awesome. Right up there with Tim Berners-Lee.

Turing was insanely brilliant. Too bad he was convicted of `acts of gross indecency' (i.e., being gay), put on hormone therapy, and died, probably from suicide, shortly thereafter. He was almost 42... Can you imagine what he might have come up with if he'd been alive for another ten or twenty years?
