A recent tutorial I wrote - http://www.webdesignforums.net/showthread.php?t=25852 - shows the basics of the membership part. You could study that code to get an idea.

    Other useful links:
    http://www.phpfreaks.com/tutorials/65/0.php , http://www.devarticles.com/c/a/PHP/C...ership-System/ , or a search: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...e+Search&meta=

Also, there are scripts that may cover all of your needs, have a look at http://wordpress.org/

    Glenn,
Do you have previous programming experience with anything like BASIC, C++, etc?

PHP is quite easy to learn if you have some previous skills in any other languages.

There's so many free scripts, it's hard to know where to begin ...

I would look at a few, try them ... then customize one for your own use.
