    is there a service similar to W3 that validates php files?

    Not that I know of, partly because there are many ways to skin a cat in PHP.

    And anyway, the w3 validator checks for valid code (no syntax errors and the like). That is what the PHP engine does.

    Yes. No syntax errors = valid, but potentially crappy, PHP.

    IIRC, the PHP executable accepts some argument which just looks for syntax errors and doesn't actually execute the script.
