    I need to add a login to a part of a site so that people have to enter a username and password to view certain parts of the site. There will be some pdf files that I will need to add a login to, as well as possibly some of the html pages.
    No one will need to sign up for anything. The people will be given the usernames and passwords beforehand.
    I really donít know what would be best to do for this, and I really donít know much, so I am looking for something free and easyÖ not that such a thing ever exists.

    It all depends on how you want the script to work.

    You could have a form which asks for a username/password that submits to a file.
    Then, in that file, you check the username/password and if they are correct, you output some links, these links are to the files.

    It can be done easily with PHP, but of course, the complexity
    can be easy to hard depending on how much security and
    what features you want.

    Example:

    Can the members change their own password?
    How many members will there be?
    Do you need to easily add members?
    Is there one admin person, or several admin people?
    What if they forget their password?

    So, it escalates into a big deal ... and soon requires
    PHP and MySQL to administer the members database.

    ==========================================

    If you want a simple thing like ONE PASSWORD for ALL MEMBERS,
    that would be really easy, but presents a possible security risk if
    that password gets out to other people.

    It all depends on how sensitive the data is, how public or private your
    website is, and if you're willing to have the site messed-up by a
    troublemaker that gets the password.

    ==========================================

    So, elaborate on what the site will do, and what level of security
    you're willing to settle for ...

    Remember that your website can be viewed by anyone on this Earth.

    The security doesnít really need to be that high. Each person will need a unique username and password that I will set up. Probably around hundred people, but could get more than a thousand. So quiet a few. Each person will not have a profile or be able to edit anything. They just need to be able to view some pages and pdf files.
