I need some help on how to do this, i don't need any of the code for the moment, i am just wondering if and how it can be done

here is what i want to do...

On a 'link to us' page make a link code somehow (i have seen URLs like this before [minicode]http://www.whatever.com/index.php?whatever[/minicode]) using php to get the username of the person and add it to the URL
when a person clicks on this link a cookie is written saying the username of the person's link that they clicked
If the person chooses to register the 'where did you hear about us from' input box is unclickable and says the username from the cookie in it
1 referral point is added to the username in the database
as you can see this is way too advanced for me so any help is appreciated

    thanks
    JR

Where would you get the username from? I take it the site would be a bulletin board of some sort?

It sounds like it could be done, although im not sure that you'd need to use cookies, just have all the vars in the URL.. and then get the 'where did you hear about us' to pull the var from the url.. correct me if i'm wrong, i'm just thinking of what I've seen in the past...

yes a bb i know how to get the username its just the rest i haven't got a clue about

I thought that using the username in the URL wouldn't be reliable because it could easily be changed when the person clicks on another link etc. with a cookie it will stay there (well if they aren't accepting cookies or clear their cache it won't) but i think that would be the best way. My idea is to have the username in the URL somehow but also have it written to a cookie

    ...good point

lol good job someone's thinking here

I've never really used cookies on a site, so I think I'll shuddup and let the pros do the talking now. :P

You never know, I might actually learn something
