I was trying to think of a better forum to put this in, but I can not find anything so I chose to put it in PHP. I was wondering if you could help me with WordPress. I want to make a theme resembling the layout mockup I made. Could someone tell me what plugins I would need and etc. ? Thanks

Wordpress themes are a set of files, each theme stored in it's own directory.

You should first find an existing theme that has the same layout as yours...

    - A two-column layout.
    - The main links on the left column, and the content on the right.
    - A bonus if you can find one with some navigation at the top.

Download that theme you found and dissect it. put it into your
own directory with your own theme name and begin altering it to your
own design. This is all done by hand using Notepad, to alter the CSS
    and PHP scripts as needed.

If you can find a theme with the same basic layout, let us know what you find.
That will help us to point you to the correct files within that theme.

Ok, I found some themes. Boy was it hard most people want their archives and stuff on the right side so it was very difficult to find but I did find some matches.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/clean-home
    - This one has the nav links in the header area which I like
    - Doesnt have the archives and recent posts on the right, but I do like how they are organized here, could I just make them go in the right column and switch them?

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/clockworksimple
    - Same thing with the nav, but couldnt really see the Preview, didnt work on my end.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/orange-techno
    - Same thing with the nav.

I can not seem to find anything with the Date and comments underneath it like I have in my layout. Anyway to combine themes? Sorry Im just really having trouble Ive never used Wordpress before and I hear such great things about it that I thought I should try to. Just never used something this complex. Used CuteNews before and thats it with CMS. So, if anyone could help me that would be great. Thanks!

You don't need any plugins to create what you have in that layout. Everything you need is included in WP.

Simplest way to create this is to start with default Kubrix theme, delete the contents of style sheet and theme images, then add your own. Some minor HTML editing will be required to move around the position of comments in relation to a post but it isn't difficult at all.

Once you start looking at the code it really is all self explanatory if you have any experience in PHP.

I agree with Jason that it's best to just customize it yourself, the CSS, the modules,
the PHP (if needed) ... I just don't know how experienced you are with that.
That's why I mentioned finding a layout that's really close. In any case, you will have
to dig into the HTML/CSS to find the areas that need to be repositioned.

Even if you have a "learning curve" with this stuff, it would be a good project for
you to tackle ... you'll learn tons of things! Get stuck? ask us ... and good luck.

If you go the custom route, this thread has some information about how to begin.

I found a few sites that showed how to make a portfolio but not sure if they are really reliable. Im thinking the link manager one is best.

I have to do a lot of reading on WordPress. Want to be all up to speed and know as much as I can about it.
