No because of PHP's nature: intended to create server-side, HTML-generating scripts.

However if there was a PHP that could make GUI programs, as fast as PHP is now, and as cross-platform as it is now, then Java can (obscenity) (person's) (obscenity).

Actually, I'm quite certain there was a project on sourceforge.net about doing exactly what you were asking... converting php program into an executable... not sure, check around on it

I just had this conversation with someone on the HostingMatters forums. Apparently, it can be compiled as a CGI app.

Java's a great language except for three extremely irritating things: it's godawful slow, no matter what people say; I develop with it at work on a P3 and a G4 and it sucks on both...it's difficult to set up for a development environment...and as much as it tries to look like a native program, it gets so many tiny details wrong that it's frustrating.

PHP and Java are working in different arenas.

Also, java is supposed to be getting faster, with jini (turning java bytecode into native machine code on the client's machine), and the developer's ability to compile java into various native machine codes.

    Probably just better server performance...

You'd be best off writing and debugging your site as text php, then compiling it. It could be tricky with all the links changing, eg my_page.php becomes cgi/my_page.cgi.

Ooh, i've just read your original post, and you want it so that you can just distribute it stand-alone. I don't think that'll ever happen, unless there's a special version of apache/php that'll do it.

When I first started on php I tried to open it in my browser, and it just came up with the source, so I wondered why they couldn't make browsers interpret it. I guess that's the divide between server-side and client-side.

A word on speeding up php, there are a couple of caching extensions out there. http://www.php-accelerator.co.uk/ looks really good--no changes to scripts needed.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/fcache is really new, and needs a bit of modification to scripts, but looks good too.
