I'm not sure if this is a php or apache question but here goes.

Because sessions began expiring prematurely (within a few minutes of a start), I examined the parameters of the cookie being set.

    lifetime: 0
    path: /

Path and domain are familiar to me from javascript and look ok. But what is the meaning of lifetime: 0? Given the session didn't end instantly it can't mean 0 seconds. Can someone explain this?

0 likely means that the session never expires.

    Have you looked at ?
