Okay, I know it's possible to automate AIM clients (i.e. SmartChild) but is it possible to send an AIM via a PHP script? I just thought of this and thought it would be a pretty cool thing (it would be for notifying me when a certain action is peformed on my website).

Well it can be done with MSN, and ICQ and etc...so why not aim ?
If you study the protocol ( there might be an rfc on it) you will know how to talk to the aim server, and then you can register for an account, and use that account on your server to login and then send a message...
So, yes, its very possible, but it requires some research
A premade code might exist.. but i just have never heared of it...

    Regards,
    Sam.

It is possible. CPanel's Web Host Manager ( www.cpanel.net )allows you to store an AIM screen name for a server. It's then used to send out alerts to another specified AIM screenname.

So it can be done, dunno how though, as the core files of cpanel are compiled.

BTW, after reading just the format of the protocol, it looks like it would be a major PITA to implement with PHP. You're best off praying that somebody's already done it (and from the Googlin' of it, they haven't).

LOL.. no kidding... after reading a couple of pages of that stuff I started googling... I think I'll ask one of my friends at school... he's developing an automated AIM client, and he might know how to easily port the stuff he's doing to PHP, even though he's working in Java afaik... BTW, AIM/ICQ/MSN would all be the same to me as I use trillian...

    That's pretty sweet.

AIM is just a simple client / server protocol with a user interface that translates communications into a 2-way communications device.

Basically, the client consists of functionality to log in to a server, send messages to the server, and listen for messages from the server. It then processes everything and spits it out onto your screen.

Obviously there is more to it than that, but not much. :-P

Well I've done a fair amount of reading... that script looks like a start... but sadly that's about it lol... This stuff is not over my head, but just too much work for the expected results I want. I wish AIM used xml like Jabber does.. .they've even got a PHP class for it... really cool stuff. Maybe I can get Trillian to interpret jabber... hmmm. I understand it now though which is kind of cool, you're right transio it is just basic client/server protocol... however, it reminds me of when I was learning C and grabbing data in a .dat file by the number of bytes in a file determining the different fields of data. Pain in the butt

Nah, not complicated but time consuming, therefore I recommend that you try to use the ICQ wwp, since you dont care anway... shouldn't take you more than a few mins to have a final working product
