Can anyone direct me to a good tutorial outlining how to create a user sign up and log-in system from scratch?

    Download this free one ...
    http://php-login-script.com/

See how it works, use it .. customize it to what you need.
It's fairly straight forward and even uses recaptcha.

I would argue that's quite out of date mlseim. There's functionality in it that's deprecated or removed and it does a load of stuff that's just really bizar; take a look at login.php lines 35-40... WTF is the point in that?

I'm using IE today on this PC.
I can't see the link you provided to the login script that you are recommending he use.
For some reason, it's not showing on my browser.

Oh deary me I do apologise. I guess I did leave the link out, oops.

There we go, can't miss this one this is also slightly out of date, however. Some reviews say this script is very nice but at the end of the day an all singing all dancing script wont necessarily do everything you want; someone else has ultimately written it with their interpretation of what it should do.

Skip finding a tutorial and use a prepackaged system such as:

I'd be very wary of all the other systems that people have pointed out. Avoid outdated, insecure software.

Here's the problem with building something from scratch that you don't understand... OR trying to re-use something that you don't understand... ( your best bet )....

Security... If you build it from scratch without understanding how it works, how do you know it's going to work and keep the users info safe ? You don't...

Same thing with pre-packaged scripts... Some of the old ones floating around out there... Have vulnerabilities and can be hacked easily... Others allow for mis-use by those that do understand it...

Pretty much common sense takes over here... Consider the source of your information... I'd go with one that is recommended by a trusted source until you know enough about what you're doing.0
