Hi,

I am trying to create 301 redirects for a clients old to new website pages, I have never done this before and though following various tutorials still bring the website crashing down and and error message. I haave come across various options but am using the following code for my .htaccess file:

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.allaboutevesalon.co.uk/pages/contact.html [NC]

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.allaboutevesalon.co.uk/contact.html/$1 [L,R=301]

I would be very grateful if someone could help me solve this issue.

Many thanks

Try adding this line, and only this line, to the top of your .htaccess file

redirect 301 /pages/contact.html http://www.allaboutevesalon.co.uk/contact.html

I just get the same error message as before:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webadmin@kundenserver.de and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I have tried various options including the following:
Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^pages/contact.html$ http://www.allaboutevesalon.co.uk/contact.html [L,R=301]

and

Options+FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngineOn

RewriteRule^\/pages\/([a-z0-9\-]+)\.html$ /$1.html [NC,L,R=301]

I found that 1&1 who the client uses for hosting might have an issue with custom .htaccess files or mod_rewrite, also it seems from researching it that 1&1 enable MultiViews by default - does that maybe help?

Is it cpanel hosting? If so, there should be a redirect tool in the dashboard you could try. Set a few up redirects and if they work, see how the tool formats the code in the .htaccess file.

There doesn't seem to be any redirect tools available....I have contacted support but still waiting, this is a nightmare! The most recent version I have tried but am still getting the '500 internal server error' from is:

Options -MultiViews
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^pages/contact.html$ http://www.allaboutevesalon.co.uk/contact.html [L,R=301]

It may be bad hosting. Thought about moving to a different host?

What you could try is redirecting to a different domain not on the same host, (Google for example). Maybe the 500 error is caused by something else?
