    Where to start?

I am interested in making a site similar to this one.. Free Fantasy Sports Betting Site With Community Game Picks, Betting Lines & Tips | WagerMinds. Ive been told to I can make a similar site with PHP and MYsql. Is this correct? Any help would be appreciated.

You could...but if you've never used PHP before, you probably shouldn't.

That is a very complex site with a lot of thinking that has gone into it, even though it appears simple on the surface. It's a server-side language, it's a database, it's at least one datafeed of some sort (this alone can be very difficult), it's marketing, it's user testing, it's a whole bunch of things that don't show up on the surface but are important parts of the site nonetheless.

Look at it this way...if you had never played baseball before, would you expect to be signed to an A-ball contract? No. That site is A-Ball. It's not the major leagues, but it's a very good site.

Take something simpler and try to build it first, then go after a site of this caliber.

Thanks for taking the time to look and respond. I have some experience with server side language and databases. The datafeed is where I have no clue. Any idea where to get information on how this works? I understand what you mean. I am working on other sites to build my skills, however this is my ultimate goal.

There are general tutorials on how to read XML and JSON datafeeds, among others. The problem is that they're just that...they're general. You'll have to modify them for your specific needs and the feeds that you're trying to retrieve. Every feed is different, every method of retrieval is different, the legal terms and ramifications by which a feed can be retrieved is different, etc.

Take Yellow Pages for example. In Canada, they allow webmasters to use certain feeds for their sites. However, they can't be stored, and the feed limit is capped at 5,000 requests per day. Things like that need to be kept in mind.
