"Please stop pretending PHP is a good language"

For those of you who are hardcore PHP zealots, you may not like what this guy has to say. I largely agree with it, but I am posting it because I think the debate would be interesting.

I don't really care what language is used. My full-time career is "Industrial Electronics", so I am pretty much using all PLC control (statement list and ladder logic). This internet stuff is just for the fun of it. I have no control over it. The internet has turned into a giant garbage dump. So I really don't have any opinion.

I guess that's an opinion? oh well.

You joke about that, Ron, but the guy's just getting slaughtered. He made some pretty good points.

Sure they will...but can they effectively argue his points without sounding like apologists?

Who is forcing anyone to use PHP? The large corporation I work for doesn't use PHP. I don't imagine Google uses PHP. Why is this even a discussion?

"Facebook uses PHP!" Dammit, Max, you oughta know that, man! (Instant standalone argument against PHP).

The problem is that most of the "popular" stuff uses PHP. W*rdPr*ss, Joomla, vBulletin, Drupal, phpBB (go figure) and the odd major site such as Facebook does. So the biggest argument "for" PHP is the populist argument.

Like I've said before, there are plenty of languages and frameworks to choose from. ASP.net. Ruby. Python. Perl. Java. And people still use PHP as if it's friggin' Kool-Aid. I just spent four hours this weekend attempting to debug a PHP issue that was caused by a server upgrade. Apparently going from PHP 5.4.14 to 5.4.20 turned a perfectly working site into a pile of mush. I got it halfway there, but since I'm "only" a project manager in this case, the developer hotshots insisted that I stop touching the code and they could do it themselves. They had all day today and got absolutely nowhere.

I don't claim to be a PHP guru, but I know enough to know that it suffers from the same problem open source suffers from in general...a relatively small group of volunteers with their own agendas attempting to satisfy a much larger group of leeches with their own agendas who contribute nothing to the project as a whole. It hasn't run its course yet, but within 3-5 years people who are PHP fans now will start making smartass comments about how bloated it's gotten and how it's garbage and how you can do stuff so much better with Language X.

there plenty of other languages to choose from.
I guess we need to know why so many people are choosing PHP.

Well, I like it because I'm lazy and it's easy - and I can see when (yeah, not if ) I have errors and that's a big help to me.
I don't like C++ - that could be because I was working on an old machine and it took ages to compile and there was no error hinting - every time I had an error I had to search it out, try to fix it and recompile, again and again...
That said, I also like javascript, it's simple and you get fun, instant results.
I'm learning Java now so I can start to play with building mobile apps. It's interesting because it does have to compile but it doesn't seem as frustrating as C++.
