Get yourself a webhost account (or install your own webhost server on your PC).
Write a script ... something that would help you in your daily life.
Example: Send a text message (or email message) to your smartphone every morning that has the day's Yahoo Weather forecast.

Eventually, you'll be getting into MySQLi (database management).

.... but start with something small.

Think of it like this: If I wanted to be a painter, I might take an online class like Lynda to learn about colors, paints, brushes, techniques, etc. But I would have to actually paint to learn how to be a painter. I would struggle for a while until I learned the proper techniques.

You have to do the same thing with scripting. You have to script, and script, and script, and more scripting. You have to fail at scripting, look up scripting examples using Google, try to determine why you are having problems, try new things, fail some more, and eventually create a working script. And do that over and over again.

    Also, check the PHP documentation.

Learning a variety of scripting languages and database management is essential to learning web development, but being "good" or "profitable" at development is determined by what you actually do for real.

The same way you get good at anything:

    Practice practice practice!

And look at how other people are writing PHP (code, books, etc.) and learn from other experts.
