Hello everyone. I'm hoping this is the appropriate forum for my question.
I'm looking for a script, or code that will determine whether a visitor to my website has already downloaded what is called a L3 Control. (code that will search local folders for a specific file).
    http://magicsquare.com/
The control is stored in the following local folder.
    c:/windows/downloaded program files/L3.cab
    it's an ActiveX control.

If the control is detected on the clients computer, the site will pass him along to the appropriate page.
If it is not detected, a different page will be passed along.
    All assistance is greatly appreciated.

I think this can be done in Javascript, or it might be in another coding language, one of the experts will help you out. I can see one problem with the theory you have given, that is, is the file always stored in this file on people's computer? It might not be on certain machines, which could cause a problem.

You say it is an Active X control, make sure that people visiting your site know what the item is, and why they have to download it, make it clear on a splash page, for example, what the File they need to download is. Make sure poeple understand.

    thanks for the reply justlivyalife.
btw, the page is in php.
As far as I know, the file is always stored in the windows/dowloaded program files directory. The program will only work through internet explorer, so I have only tested it on windows machines.
From the splash page, a visitor would select to enter the site, at which time, I'd like a script to determine if the L3 control exists in a local folder. If it does not, a popup would appear explaining the download.
If the L3 file is already there, the visitor would be passed straight into the site.
    Thanks again

I doubt you could poke around in their files for security reasons. Another way you could approach this problem is to have their IP added to a database when they download the file then check for it when they return.
