Is there anyway to destroy a running session without having a user click "log out".

I mean, if a user logs in, the session is available even if he leaves the "session protected" pages. So if he returns to the protected pages, the old session is still valid, and he can access them without a second login. This can potentially be a security problem. Closing the browser obviously dumps the session, but is it possible to destroy a running session as the users exits the session protected pages?

I know there are some timeout options, but I would like it to happen instantly.

I think cookies have this. So maybe link your session with the cookies somehow. (correct me if I am wrong)

I'm far from an expert, but since cookies are programable objects I guess you could enter some sort of behaviour in them.

However, since a lot of people turn off cookie acceptance in their browsers I guess that wouldn't really solve the problem. If the only way is through cookies I guess I'll just leave it as is, or inform admissable users that they have to enable cookies.
(which by the way opens another question; in many browsers you can set a "level" for accepting cookies. What sort of "cookie programming" triggers an alert/blocks it contra accepting it?
