    It looks to me like you maybe renamed a function by accident or are using your own and forgot to define that function name. I'm refering to the same function the php generated error message is: message_die()

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function: message_die()
    ...
    message_die(CRITICAL_ERROR, "Could not connect to the database");
    The only thing close to that is the php function die(). I would suggest you review the documentation for the die function and then review your code and see if there is a custom function that was supposed to be created somewhere that for whatever reason just didn't get created or is commented out. If not maybe try using just [minicode]die("Could not connect to the database");[/minicode]

    i notice a database error -- if(!$db->db_connect_id) {
    message_die(CRITICAL_ERROR, "Could not connect to the database");

    either the database is not setup or the config file is incorrect

    I've got Nuke running locally, and when you turn off MySQL it comes up with the same error.

    Make sure that in config.php the following are correct:

    $dbhost = "localhost"; // almost always localhost
    $dbuname = "root"; // username
    $dbpass = ""; // password
    $dbname = "nuke"; // default is nuke

    Have you done your SQL install?
