Can google penalize my site for some inbound links? For example from sites with low TrustRank?

    Yes.
I could go on about Google or other ways to SEO, but the short answer is yes.
I did some research on this awhile back and have seen cases where competitors did IBL's to hurt a site's ranking.

I'm sure that is for the consipiracy theorists out there, but I have not really seen any case where IBL's help your Google rankings. I could be wrong, but hopefully if I am, someone on this forum can correct me.

    Good luck.......

Google mostly bases how it ranks each website by its "importance". If your website has quality IBL's, then you will rank better because Google will see that your website is "important".
