    First post so here goes!

Saw this on a web site a while back:

Incontestable advantage of non reciprocal links consists of the fact that a 'long time ago' Search Engines learned to detect reciprocal linking like an artificial method of site optimization and for sites to get better positions, and therefore non reciprocal links are more powerful.
Just wondered if anyone had anything to add to it, we are just experimenting with reciprocial links and don't know weather it a good idea or not now after seeing this?
    Any comment greatly recieved :alien:

i've heard mixed things about this, apparently, the more sites that link back to your site the better, the content has to be related of course, not something like football > buy babies nappies

Reciprocal links are Good or Bad only depends on the site, Such that your PR is smaller than the site your links displayed.
Reciprocal links are nothing but a text/ banner link to a site that, somewhere in its pages, carries a similar text/banner link to your own site. Reciprocal Links are another method of attracting traffic. Post your favourite link exchanges and discuss the issues relating to this style of online community

The best explanation Iíve heard went something like this.

Donít underestimate the people a Google. Their analysis routings are highly sophisticated and always getting better at finding what they want.
And what Google wants is to identify the best sites.
One, if not the most important identifier for this is inward, recommending links. A highly ranked home page with a link in the middle of some text for example.
What Google does not want, and will penalise for, are people who try to cheat. Link farms, link exchanges etc are all cheats. We can all see them straight away so you can bet Google can.
To summarise, if your links are genuine you should be OK but if you start adding random links just to boost your site then you might get away with it, will probably be wasting your time and at worst could get penalised.

You should focus on incoming links. Reciprical links are OK if they are stategically used. They however don't carry the same weight as non-reciprical links.

I agree with webfinity, focus on incoming links. I have heard that reciprical links can harm your ranking if you use stradegies such as a "link farm". If you have to use reciprical links, try to choose websites that have similar content. A good way to generate "one-way" links is to write content articles and then submit the articles to high ranking article directories.

Reciprocal links are still useful though - even directory sites - you just need to select the directory carefully.
Find high PR directories which specialise in your niche, and you'll hopefully find these links more valuable to you than a link from a random, generic directory.

Reciprocal links are not weighed in SE's as much as natural and organic links. But it is still a factor in your PR building
