What types of redirects will Google follow, and which will it not?
    • HTTP Location headers with 301 Permanently Moved?
    • Lame <meta> refresh?
    • Even lamer Javascript window.location changes?

What I'm trying to find is the most efficient means of redirecting the user such that:
    • As much as possible is done server-side (i.e., done by sending HTTP headers) rather than by the browser.
    • Set up such that Google will not follow the link. It's not a security problem if Google follows it, but the point of the link is to not have Google follow it yet allow normal browsers to do it.
    • Try to not actively block Google (i.e., not detect its IP, user-agent, etc.), but passively take an approach that Google chooses not to follow.

Right now, I'm using a rel of "external nofollow" and redirecting via a Location header. However, I suspect that, should Google ignore the "nofollow" relation, it will still obey the redirect, which I don't want it to do.

I'm relatively certain Google follows 301 Permanently Moved headers, as there would be no reason for it not to. It probably follows meta refreshes, too. Javascript changes, I'd have a harder time believing, though who knows. I think you just trust it to obey nofollow... And maybe make use of robots.txt.

I'm pretty sure 301 will work, I've seen it before. Can't promise anything for the other two, though.
