I have had this website for about six months and my forum has valuable information on it and so does my site, but I still have no visitors to my site or forum members. I have done a significant bit of link building and have 400 links to my site according to Yahoo. Not sure what google and MSN are doing they show far less links. I have links in my forum sigs. What do I need to do to get my community off of the ground? Please, I am new to this and can't seem to find the attract the members I want. If you have any suggestions, please share them.

    Hi phpnewb,
Try some social media optimization. Get an account on http://mybloglog.com/, for example. That is one of several sites that will help you build some buzz about your forum, although I am not sure what your forum is about since I don't see a link.

You have to advertise, and get a good core of members, then encourage them to tell their friends, and grow that way.

Oh yea, and their staying will depend on your ability to cope with the growth, as well as the quality of the content that you (and ultimately, your members) infuse.

Here is a link to my forum: http://www.chattennis.com
I have done essentially everything suggested and still am having lots of trouble. Do I need more backlinks? I can't seem to find any good ones.

Where have you advertised? Have you put up fliers at local courts? Tennis or country clubs? Local schools or colleges/universities? Have you looked at advertising at local tournaments (even asking if you could have a small ad in exchange for advertising the club hosting the event on the site)?

Have you joined other tennis forums and added a link in your signature? Have you submitted to dmoz.org?

It took less than 5 minutes for me to come up with these ideas, and there are tons of other ways to advertise to get people to join, you just have to be creative!

The only thing I haven't tried is offline promotion. I am currently working on a flier and some cards that I plan on posting locally.

Chris is right with the suggestions provided. Here is something else I noticed: right now your title tag is out of place. It should be the first thing that immediately follows the <head> tag. Try moving it up to that position.

More importantly, the <title> tage needs to be optimized. Currently, this is it:
    <title>Chattennis.com</title>

You should change it to include the keyphrases you are targeting. For example:
<title>Tennis Forum To Help Improve Your Tennis Skills and Chat with Other Players</title>

    or something like that.

Chris is also right about the timeline. Although you have had the forums for 6 months, it has only been a week or so since you began optimizing it. It will take some time.
