Focus on building quality and targted backlinks through submitting to high PR directories, Social Bookmarking sites, submitting articles to article directories, etc. Here is a more detailed list I posted in another thread. Hope this help

Directory Submissions - targeted links at high PR directories
Blog and Forum Postings - to high PR and frequently crawled sites
    Social Bookmarking
    Classified Ads
Article Marketing - submit to high PR directories, could also serve as link baits
Link Exchange - with relevant and authority sites
Link Baits - for organic linking
    Etc. etc.

Content, content, content. It means everything. Good content = visitors = people linking to you = inbound links. There is no substitute. Many search engines are sensitive about link trading sites and the such. Content is key.
Note on code: If I give code, please note that it is simply sample code to demonstrate an effect. It is not meant to be used as-is; that is the programmer's job. I am not responsible to give you support or be held liable for anything that happens when using my code.

Link baits can take many form - an article, a video, a joke, news, etc. This is anything you have in your site that will attract other sites to link to your site naturally Kind of like laying the fish hook and just waiting for the fishes to bite

Try ezines and goarticle - but really, put your best article in your own site. You don't get any SEO value when other sites link to your article and cite the directory that you submitted your article as the source...

An inbound link are links from other sites pointing to our site.

There are other methods invloved in SEO. The ones that have been suggested are just the offpage side of it.

Pay per click does not help in SEO. But it can be a very effective means to draw targted traffic if you know how the system works.
