i've heard this theory a few times and was curious if it is true.. do search engines actually know how long you have purchased a hosting package for? and does it help get your site at a higher rank w/ the Search engines?

    thanks

I highly doubt it. Though they probably lower the rank of common free hosts.

I have heard it said that renewing your domain name for a long term (3+ years) is looked favorably upon, whether or not it is true, who knows.

It looks like google, at least, *might* use this as part of the way they determine if you're a spammer or not. But I suspect this is factored in with other things and doesn't adversely impact your ranking unless there are other indicators that you are a spammer.

Google gives a bit of importance to domains and sites that are well kept and maintained. A domain that has not expired would indicate that the owner plans to keep the domain for a long time. In calculating PR, IMO, the age of a domain is a factor.

Also, frequent changes on hosting providers seem to affect rankings adversely. I had some problems when we change servers. SO I would conclude based on my own experience that hosting seem to affect your rankings as well.

I also heard that purchasing your domain name for a longer period is looked fvaorably upon by the SEs. If you are serious about what you do, I'd suggest that you consider buying your domain name for longer then 1 year. You will have to renew anyways
