Seems like I'm very low in the google rankings, what typically gets you nearer to the top?

Here's a good post explaining what's important in improving your SE ranking:

    http://www.webdesignforums.net/showthread.php?t=8173

The best way to achieve the above is:

    1. Have a really good website with really good content.
    2. In your business, it's best to make your customers really happy so they link to you.

Another tip is to research on where your competition - the ones that ranks high - are building their backlinks. See what you missed out and try to outdo them as well in terms of quality link building

    1. Find keywords that people are looking for. Make sure these are key phrases, not just words like 'ipod, music, gardening'. Instead look for a phrase that describes what you do are what you are selling 'ipod mp3 country downloads' , 'free pinao guides to download' , 'rose garden tips and advice'
    2. Optimize your site with these keywords. Not too much though. Get the density wrong and Google will penalise you for spamming!!. Meta Keywords, Meta Description, Meta Title and put these in your site content too.
    3. Search engine submission and Directory submission.
    4. Link Building - (very important for google)
    Hope this helps

No one asked you this but what kind of website do you own? Have you got a link so we can see what you have currently?

This would allow us to provide you with better ideas and support.

Everyone above me has given you good advice.
I recommend reading this blog post i wrote
    Basic Search Engine Optimization Techniques

Something EVERYONE forgot to mention is...PATIENCE AND HARD WORK!

Also on my blog check out the Rank Checker tutorial, this gives you the position of your pages in the google/yahoo indexes. Make some changes, wait 1 or 2 days, do a rank check. Make more changes, wait a couple more days, do a rank check.

Positive results = your techniques are working
Negative results = remember the last techniques you applied, reverse them, and try a different route.

I read up on SEO for a month, and now for my death note site im on page 1 for a couple keywords, and nearing page 1 with some others. One keyword phrase i worked really hard on was "death note episodes subbed", and im on page 1 now (at the bottom) but im working on it!

    Heres the rank checker tutorial
Rank Checker Tutorial - Infinitely Looping

As time goes on, youll see your rankings move a little quicker up (this is due to the fact that y ou may be getting inbound links, and this is a BIG factor in terms of SE ranking)

    RIGHT PATIENT BEYOND BELIEF haha
about submitting your site to online directories... that is an easy way to get one way text links aimed at your homepage. But, the best SEO friendly way to do it takes some time and monotony.

You can use http://www.onewaytextlink.com to make it a bit easier, but it still is going to take hours for you to submit to all the available directories and some don't include you for up to 6 months, so its best to do it early on after you have launched (if you do it before you launch or while you have an under construction page up, they usually wont include you at all and then you are back to square one)

As above, onpage optimisation (not too much) in title tag, h1-h6 tags, content, urls, alt text, internal links etc and then links from a mix of sources(articles, social bookmarking, directories, other websites if possible, forums, blog comments, press releases etc).
After that, you may need to wait - Google can penalise new sites sometimes; ours got a boost at 12 months and has now just recieved another boost at 17/18 months (this might be due to a change in algorithms, not sure).
