They help a search engine spider map your website more effectively as a result they are a good thing, no matter what kind of site you are running.

Do you mean RDF? I imagine RDF sitemaps would be excellent for SEO and e-commerce, as they would allow auto-indexing of your catalog.

A good site map will also benefit your website. Make sure you add ALT tags and Titles to all levels of your sitemap links. This is a must have element at the moment.

Also ensure your product use the correct naming conventions.

Stay well clear of indexing your images as code numbers or references. It may make yours, or your clients life easier when it comes to updating stock or new ranges but lets face it is the search engines that we all want to impress.

Try naming your images as a short description of the product, even better do your keyword research on each product title.

For example if your selling antique rocking horses and you discover a large search trend for antique rockin horse, naming your product antrockh1.jpg is not as affective as antique-rockin-horse.jpg.

XML sitemaps will benefit your website, however it comes with the continual responsibility to update it otherwise this could cause crawl issues.

    Hi,

A sitemap helps search engine spiders .It won't improve your ranking. Just give the spiders a better idea of what pages you have so they can find them easier.
