    I am a beginner at web design and need some help creating and adding a sitemap. Can anyone give me some tips or step by step info on how to do this?? I have a small website - only 12 pges and nothing too elaborate.

    an alternate way of doing this is also just create a regular webpage called sitemap.html and put a list of all your links on that and throw a link at the bottom of your other pages. Not the best way, but another way just the same.

    These kind of sitemaps aren't really necessary as most users don't actually use them. However, they are good for link architecture capitalizing on anchor text.

    The links listed above in the previous post will suffice. If you have a really small site as you noted, creating a manual sitemap.xml file might be your best option.

    you can go xml-sitemaps.com, xml site map is an additional tool that helps the search engine to crawl you website..........

    Link Architecture is the most important area these days are very importanat and major search engines have a very important criteria of crawl through site maps .So we need to be very specific in that part as this could be most importanat area of concern so that you can get the organic traffic in a good manner.
    Wired & redefyned1 has mentioned it so clearly that i don't have to say any thing on this part so just follow the following steps mentioned above.

    There is a software "Gsitecrawler". With that you can create site map for both google(sitermap.xml) and yahoo(urllist.txt).
