I'm thinking about creating a page on my site dedicated to link exchange but I heard that it will lower the website's page rank -- firstly, is that true? Secondly, if I add rel="nofollow" will that affect PR at all? I presume adding nofollow should be the most optimal way to do link exchange because bots won't crawl it? Any advice? Thanks!

Any kind of link exchange is a bad idea. All the legitimate search engines ( the ones you WANT to be listed on ) will not only penalize you, but if you don't have good content, they may just drop you. They have way too many sites that are legitimate and doing everything right, to worry about a site that is encouraging something they look down on.

Why do they look down on link exchanges, because anyone with any site may participate in a link exchange. Your page rank ia partly based on back links of a relevant nature. Say back links about similar content, industry, etc.

So a back link from a site about auto parts, when your site ia about home improvements is worth zero and just adds to them having to sort it out.

Spend your time getting legitimate back links from directories and categories that fit what your site ia about, make sure you are listed and getting indexed by all the major search engines, then as your back links to legitimate sites increase, you page ranks will increase

First try to get back links from High PR dofollow sites. There were lots of sites who gives you back links with Do Follow link attribute. I think Do Follow link will be more beneficial in compare to No Follow links.

"Do Follow" does not exist! it is the absence of "nofollow" only.

You seem to be saying this a lot lately. Maybe we should make a sticker...

Yeah - I hardly ever post this forum anymore - there is so much stupid and just plain wrong advice being given here, and it kinda makes me cranky.

    But here's the sticker...
