I keep hearing the term 'backlink', is this what that is? A dofollow link to your site from another site? Still a bit confused about dofollow/nofollow to be honest but I'll just assume dofollow bad, nofollow good?

dofollow does not and never has existed. It's a made-up attribute created by SEO wannabes to try and explain the absence of a nofollow link. I believe the term was created in 2005 by someone naming a W*rdPr*ss plugin in response to the nofollow attribute being introduced because he was throwing a hissy fit with Google (no, really, I think that's what happened).

A backlink is an inbound link to a page. That's it.

Really, Kathleen? And how do you feel about lying about one's geographic location?

In the seo process both no follow and do follow links matter:
Do-follow links are best for ranking of any keyword because those website which are giving do-follow link, Google sees but no-follow link Google never see but these type of links better for traffic.

Do ppl just read titles of these posts? It seems like half these responses are repeated and wrong.. I am still very new to this but with just a little research i can find that there is no such thing as a "do-follow" link.. There are links.. And there are no-follow links..

    "Seems like"?

Every time I see one of those posts, I'm reminded of that Alanis Morissette song lyric..."Thank you, India!'

A No follow link is the link which does not include any point in the favour of the page does not help to boost pagerank of the website and does not help the site to come up in the Search Engine Result Pages but reversely Do follow link is the link which helps website to get an inbound link.

    For the millionth time,

    DOFOLLOW DOESN'T EXIST.

There is no debate because there is no such thing as a dofollow link. This isn't hard.
