    An SEO Contest

    Well...it's not really a contest. I'm not giving away prizes or anything. However, you will receive bragging rights if you can figure out the answer to my question, and you can point and ridicule and laugh at anyone who got it wrong (note: do not actually point and ridicule and laugh at anyone who got it wrong. That's not very nice.)

    Here's the scenario: an "Internet Marketing Guru" met a client of mine at a seminar for their local Chamber of Commerce and promoted certain traffic generating ideas, with samples available on a Google drive for download. Among other things, he mentioned that WordPress was a great way to promote a website, with all sorts of wonderful features that would drive traffic to the website.

    I happened to receive the Guru's email by accident and looked at the site. The link is below (using bit.ly to mask it):
    Guru's Website

    The contest question is this: I spotted something within a minute and another thing within a few seconds thereafter pertaining to the Guru's website that immediately led me to realize conclusively that this company could not be trusted and were completely full of crap. What was it that I spotted, and where is it?

    I'll reveal the answer on Tuesday at some point.

    I'm not sure what you noticed, but this dude got tired of making potato chips after 23 years (which, judging from his photo would have made him roughly 8 when he started "speed packaging" snack food) and decided he was an internet marketing guru. 1500 offices in 87 countries...impressive.

    EDIT: "HootSuite Solution Partner" badge. lol

    HEY! Nothing says Internet Marketing Guru like the ability to pack 1000's of Doritos in an hour. DO NOT DISPARAGE TEH TRAININGZ.

    Anyone else want to have a go at this?

    Maybe it's because the company is based in Toronto, but I have heard of them before myself...although it had been years since they showed up on my radar, and I certainly wasn't expecting the scenario that played out.

    Just because Tuesday is less than 24 hours away, I've decided to provide a hint...it has nothing to do with Jorge himself. While his past career stuffing salted snack treats into bags doesn't exactly help prepare him for a career in the Internet Marketing world, it's not what I would deem "conclusive". This is something that an SEO company even mildly worth its salt would look for, find quite easily, and fix.

    You are probably seeing something so simple I don't readily find it. I do see several things that I would want to see changed.
    1.) The title
    2.) The word marketing appears 7 times in the first paragraph
    3.) Copyright is 3 years out of date

    Okay, since no one got it (Ron and Stu, I'm very disappointed in you both and you're now on timeout!) I decided to share the answer.

    The key wasn't what was on the page...it was what was in the page. What was on the page was pretty bad, particularly the chip-bagging. That made me snort water out my nose when I read it. However, that's not something you can hold up to someone's face and say "you don't know what you're talking about"...inexperience does not necessarily equate to lack of knowledge or skill. If we accept the claim of "1500 employees" at its face...and there's reason enough to believe that as indicated below...a company is bound to hire at least one idiot along the way that they can hopefully train to become a useful idiot in the future.

    Since something didn't seem right to me, and since I know that WP typically isn't used for "cookie cutter" MLM-style sites as this appeared to be, I viewed the source.

    The first thing I spotted was this:
    Code:
    <head id="Head">
    <!--**********************************************************************************-->
    <!-- DotNetNuke - http://www.dotnetnuke.com                                          -->
    <!-- Copyright (c) 2002-2013                                                          -->
    <!-- by DotNetNuke Corporation                                                        -->
    <!--**********************************************************************************-->
    While comment tags can be added just about anywhere and made to say anything...which leads to the possibility that they can be faked...I suspected this one was legitimate because of the presence of an id in the <head> tag. This is fairly typical of .NET sites (DNN is a .NET technology), as the head tag can be utilized a server-side HTML tag and controlled accordingly.

    The second thing I noticed came immediately thereafter:
    Code:
     <div style="display: none;">
    <a href="http://e-kredikartilefaturaode.net/" title="kredi kartı ile fatura öde">kredi kartı ile fatura ödeme</a>

    Now, one would think that an SEO company with 1500 employees in 87 countries would know that their site clearly had been hacked...ironically, by a crappy SEO wannabe...and have already taken steps to remove the hack long before I ever got to it. This has been sitting like this for at least the past five days, and when I pointed out that the site was hacked, I was accused by several people of not knowing what I was talking about because they were "hackproof" (their pseudo-word, NOT mine).

    No...no, you're not. WSI World, I nominate you for SEO's Outstanding Tool Company for 2016. Consider this an hono(u)r, as there are a ton of horrible SEO companies out there. You have stood out amongst your peers as the worst.

    Well, clearly they put that there since they're hackproof. That's why I didn't think anything of it.

    Of COURSE! What better way to show that you're hackproof than by putting a hack onto your own site to scare off hackers? That's like buying a timeshare to shut timeshare salespeople up. 60% of the time it works...EVERY TIME! FANTANA!
