I live in England, Britain, the UK. How come I can't register a .UK domain?

If you live in Rusia you can have a .RU, if you live in Italy you can have .IT. Even if you live in Lithuania you can have .LI.

    Why can't I register a .UK domain????? Why do I have to use a .CO.UK; or a .ORG.UK; .COM.UK or a .INFO.UK????

Is there a reason for it?

It's the same in Cyprus. to register a .com.cy you have to have a registered company and prove that you are the owner of that company. Which is pretty good if you come to think about it, so people don't go around buying all the domain names they can of companies before them.

The one god thing about it is that we only have to pay about 7 for a .co.uk. Other coutry have to pay 60-100 for a country domain.

The more I think about this the more it is anoying me.

This is the reply I recived from Nominet:

    Hi

Thank you for your email. The .uk Top Level Domain (TLD) is separated into
sub categories, Second Level Domains (SLD's). People are encouraged to
register a Domain Name within the SLD that corresponds to their type of
activity. The SLDs that are managed by Nominet UK are:

.co.uk for commercial enterprises (the largest SLD in the UK)

    .me.uk for personal domains

    .org.uk for non-commercial organisations

.ltd and .plc for registered company names only

    .net.uk for Internet Service Providers

    .sch.uk for schools

This is policy decision made by Nominet UK in August 1996 when Nominet
first came into existence, this is to allow a greater number of domain
names to be registered under the .uk TLD and a degree of categorisation of
    the domain names registered.

    Regards,
    Brian Adams
